How to Stay Competitive In This Changing Internet Environment

Print Email

stay-competitive-internet.pngIs it time to take a look at how your website can stay competitive in this changing Internet environment?

One of the best ways to boost search engine rankings and engage your target audience is to "grow" your site with valuable, original content. But before you start hammering on your keyboard in an enthusiastic frenzy, there's a little bit more to it than that...

Your new content needs to be:

  • True "web copy" - meaning not written in the same style you would use for printed materials.

Properly written web copy is optimized for search engines cetainly, but it is also written in a friendly style designed to attract, impress, and keep the visitor on the page.

This is quite a delicate balance! Formal writing styles acceptable in the print world simply do not achieve these objectives.

  • Focused on a single topic or idea.

It is much easier (and preferred) to rank in search results when someone is looking for particular rather than general information. For example, your competition may be killing you on the search term "tennis shoes" but you win hands-down when someone searches for "Nike Kobe Bryant Shoes"!

This is because you had the foresight to create a web page dedicated to that particular shoe - written brilliantly of course :-)

Ask yourself... which would you want?

           - To rank high on "tennis shoes" pulling in every lookie-loo on the web

             OR

           - To rank high on "Nike Kobe Bryant shoes" luring people to your site who are ready to buy them

    No brainer!

  • Either helpful, controversial, or funny.

Considering that you are a business that provides a solution to a problem, your new content will most likely be helpful. With each skillful tip and proficient advice offered in the name of help, you forge ahead of your competition in the mind of your prospect. After all, that is where the battleground really is!

  • Consistently added to your website - ideally every week and certainly no less than once a month.

Adding new content to your website on a regular basis makes search engines like Google pay attention, and visitors a reason to return.

Now if the idea of writing pages and pages of this kind of content for your website seems daunting or overwhelming, then you probably shouldn't be the one writing it anyway!

Your conclusion that writing web copy is a specialized skill is 100% correct, and it is best left to the web copy expert.
